What we handle

What Austin clients ask us about

Startups and software companies often qualify for the federal research credit under section 41 and can deduct domestic research costs immediately under section 174A. Early-stage companies can use up to $500,000 a year of credit against payroll taxes. Founders and investors in C corporations may exclude gain under section 1202 if the stock and company meet the qualified small business stock rules.

Employees at Austin tech companies receive RSUs, incentive stock options and ESPP shares, each with different tax timing, withholding gaps and AMT exposure. Companies hiring remotely in other states also need payroll registration and nexus planning, and Texas companies must manage the franchise tax as they grow.

Questions

Frequently asked

If your question isn't here, call (703) 880-8412 and you'll reach a person.

Do you have an office in Austin?

Our offices are in Northern Virginia, Washington, DC and New York. We serve Austin clients remotely and visit on site when an engagement needs it.

Can an Austin startup with no profit use the R&D credit?

Often yes. A qualified small business can apply up to $500,000 a year of research credit against the employer share of payroll taxes.

What is QSBS?

Section 1202 lets eligible shareholders exclude gain on qualified small business stock in a C corporation. For stock issued after July 4, 2025, partial exclusions start after three years and the full exclusion after five, subject to caps and company requirements.

Why did I owe tax when my RSUs vested?

Employers often withhold federal tax on RSUs at a flat supplemental rate that is lower than your actual bracket, so many employees owe more at filing.

Do Texas companies pay franchise tax?

Most entities with limited liability do once revenue exceeds the no-tax-due threshold.
