Jersey City, NJ · Local advisory

New Jersey and New York tax for Jersey City professionals and businesses.

Jersey City and Hoboken are home to finance and technology firms and the professionals who commute across the Hudson. Our New York office serves them in person or by video.

What we handle

What Jersey City clients ask us about

Many Jersey City residents work in Manhattan or for employers based there. New York taxes their New York-source wages as nonresidents, and its convenience of the employer rule can reach days worked from home. New Jersey then gives a credit for tax paid to New York. Getting these returns right avoids double tax.

Jersey City's finance and tech workforce often holds RSUs and has family and assets abroad. Local businesses deal with New Jersey corporation business tax, BAIT elections and payroll in two states. We plan for all of it.

Questions

Frequently asked

If your question isn't here, call (703) 880-8412 and you'll reach a person.

I live in Jersey City and work in Manhattan. Do I pay tax twice?

No, if returns are filed correctly. New York taxes your New York wages and New Jersey gives a credit for that tax, though the higher rate generally applies.

What is New Jersey BAIT?

The Business Alternative Income Tax lets pass-through entities pay New Jersey tax at the entity level, generally allowing a federal deduction, with a credit to owners.

Do you have an office near Jersey City?

Our New York office at 1177 Avenue of the Americas serves Jersey City clients, in person or by video.

Can you represent me before the IRS?

Yes. Our CPAs represent individuals and businesses in IRS examinations, appeals and collections nationwide under a Form 2848 power of attorney.
