Tax planning for IT consultants: W-2, 1099 or corp-to-corp, done right.

Independent IT consultants can save meaningfully with the right entity, expenses and retirement plan, but consulting income has its own limits and multi-state rules. We set up the structure and keep it compliant.

What we handle

Key decisions for consultants

Working as a W-2 employee of a staffing firm, a 1099 independent contractor or through your own company on corp-to-corp terms changes who pays payroll taxes, what you can deduct and what paperwork clients require. Consultants with work-authorization visas also need to confirm that self-employment or owning a company fits their immigration status before switching.

Consulting is a specified service business, so the section 199A deduction phases out at higher incomes. An S corporation can reduce self-employment tax on profits above a reasonable salary, and a solo 401(k) or defined benefit plan can shelter more. Projects in several states can create filing obligations in each.

Questions

Frequently asked

If your question isn't here, call (703) 880-8412 and you'll reach a person.

Is corp-to-corp better than W-2?

It can be if your rate is enough higher to cover payroll taxes, benefits and admin costs. We compare them side by side.

Should my consulting LLC elect S corporation status?

Often once profit comfortably exceeds a reasonable salary for your role. The election adds payroll and filing costs, so we model it first.

Can I deduct my home office?

Yes, if a space is used regularly and exclusively for the business. S corporation owners usually use an accountable plan reimbursement.

I worked on a project in another state. Do I file there?

Usually yes, as a nonresident, and your home state generally gives a credit for that tax.
