Guide · Year-end planning

Year-end tax planning checklist: what to do before December 31.

Most tax savings require action before the year ends. Use this checklist with your advisor in the fall, while there is still time to act.

What we handle

For businesses and owners

Project the year's profit and decide on owner salary, bonuses and distributions. Confirm retirement plan contributions and whether a new plan, such as a cash balance plan, should be adopted. Time purchases of equipment and vehicles so they are placed in service before year end if you want the deduction this year, and review whether the state pass-through entity tax election makes sense.

For individuals, review estimated tax payments against safe harbors, harvest capital losses, make charitable gifts of appreciated stock or fund a donor-advised fund, use annual exclusion gifts, and check required minimum distributions and Roth conversion opportunities.

Questions

Frequently asked

If your question isn't here, call (703) 880-8412 and you'll reach a person.

When should we meet for year-end planning?

October or November is best, with a mid-year check-in for businesses with changing results.

Does buying equipment in December help?

Only if it is placed in service by December 31 and the deduction is worth more than keeping the cash.

What if my income is unusually high this year?

Accelerating deductions, funding retirement plans and charitable gifts this year can help.

Can I still set up a retirement plan?

Many plans can be adopted up to the tax return due date, but some deadlines are December 31. We confirm yours.
